03.05.2019 - 09.05.2019 71st Annual Meeting of American Academy of Neurology (AAN)

The Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) provides an arena where neurologists and neuroscientists can network with people of the same profession. It is attended by more than 15,000 neurologists and neuroscientists from the US and abroad.

This year’s meeting will comprise several engaging plenary sessions, courses, lectures, and workshops. Over twenty different topics in neurology and neuroscience will be covered, including behavioral neurology, neuro-oncology, autoimmune neurology, and sleep and movement disorders, to name a few.

A noteworthy addition this year is the immersive “BrainDome” experience—a guided audio-visual tour of the brain’s inner workings. For the latest technological innovations, don’t miss the lecture by Dr. Hugh Herr, head of the Biomechatronics group at MIT’s Media Lab, on the latest bionic solutions for emulating natural limbs.

Headache, and specifically migraine, will take center stage in many of the events. In the contemporary clinical issues plenary session, Dr. Jessica Ailani, MD (Medstar Georgetown Neurology, McLean, VA) will discuss “Advances in the Acute Treatment of Migraine”. If your interests lie in treatment options for children and adolescents, there are a couple of particularly relevant courses: “Child Neurology: Headache” and “Child Neurology: Updates in Autism, Migraine, MS, and Stroke”. Another interesting course is “Neuro-otology: Diagnosis and Treatment of Nuances Causes of Dizziness”, which touches on the causes and management of vestibular migraine.

The courses offered are so diverse. “Introduction to Primary Headache Disorders I” and II offer a broad understanding. But if you are curious about acupuncture as an adjunctive therapy, or promising dietary interventions, you can be sure to find something at AAN 2019 for you.
